What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer affects the skin and can affect any part of the body. It is often caused by ultraviolet light originating from the sun or tanning beds. Since those of us in Little River can’t avoid being outdoors entirely, we are exposed to sunlight daily, weekly and monthly.

The good news is, most skin cancer lesions respond well to skin cancer treatment especially when treated in the early stages. Best practice is to be screened for skin cancer and make routine appointments with a dermatologist.

To set up a skin cancer screening, please contact our office at 843-399-9965.

Skin Cancer Types

Skin cancer develops when the building blocks of our skin become damaged and rapidly multiply in a strange pattern. These building blocks are our skin cells and this bizarre fashion of multiplying leads to malignant tumors.

Malignant tumors in the form of skin cancer come in many different types. Some are rare, some are common and they all behave differently. The 3 types of skin cancer are:

Basal Cell Carcinoma
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Malignant Melanoma

Here at Atlantic Dermatology we treat all types of skin cancer. If you are in or live near the Little River area and have concerns about a skin spot or need to be treated for skin cancer or would like a skin cancer check, call us at 843-399-9965 to set an appointment.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer. It often forms on areas of the skin that are most often exposed to the sun. Such areas include the face, ears, scalp, neck, arms and hands. Typically, basal cell carcinoma is a slow growing type of skin cancer.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

The second most common type of skin cancer is Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Even though it occurs on areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to the sun, it can occur anywhere. This type of skin cancer can grow deep and spread to other parts of the body. When detected early and surgically removed, Squamous Cell Carcinoma is almost always curable.

Malignant Melanoma

The least common but most deadly and dangerous form of skin cancer is Malignant Melanoma. It often presents itself in an existing mole or will appear like a new mole. The key to treating malignant melanoma is early skin cancer diagnosis and early treatment. Cancerous moles may change or appear suddenly.

If you are in Little River and notice changes in any moles or identify moles you have not noticed before, please contact our office for an appointment. Call 843-399-99654 or fill out our online form.

Warning Signs of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer bumps, lumps and spots don’t always look the same. They can be flat or raised, scaly or scar-like, light or dark and more. Some indicators to be aware of, however, include skin spots that don’t heal or reoccur, changing moles and lumps or bumps that grow rapidly.

Although skin cancer can present itself in many different ways, there are certain warning signs that shouldn’t be ignored.

A reddish and/or scaly patch that doesn’t heal
A recurring sore that bleeds
A lump with a central depression that may grow quickly
A mole that changes in size, color or shape
